Auberle Youth Unveil Mural Project as Part of Therapeutic Treatment
Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) August 28, 2013 -- Auberle will unveil and dedicate a series of murals created by youth on Monday, Sept. 9 at 3:30 p.m. at Auberle’s main campus in Pittsburgh, PA. Youth from across Auberle’s 16 programs collaborated with MLK Group (Moving the Lives of Kids), a professional muralist group that specializes in working with at-risk youth, to create six 8 ft. by 4 ft. murals and a series of self-portraits that will be displayed around Auberle’s facilities. The event will include youth artists and members of the community.
The mural project is part of Auberle’s certification process in a treatment model called The Sanctuary Model™. The Sanctuary Model™ integrates current brain and medical research, best practices in promoting emotional, mental and behavioral health, and healing strategies for at-risk youth and their families. Auberle youth have completed mural projects in the past including a series of murals for the Pennsylvania Westmoreland County Courthouse in 2011. In this current project, Auberle adapted the theme of the murals to incorporate The Sanctuary Model™. Youth were asked to reflect on key concepts from The Sanctuary Model™ and incorporate them into their design. These projects allow youth and families to express and react to traumatic experiences, ultimately helping to reduce anxiety, aggression and depression levels.
“Many of our youth have experienced some form of past trauma or negative experience and struggle with ways to appropriately express that experience,” said Gary Hazy, Director of Residential Services. “It’s our job as an agency to provide ways. The murals provide a healthy outlet to deal with past trauma while also asking the kids to think about the future.”
