Austin Dentists Share Dental Resolutions for a New Smile in the New Year
Austin, Texas (PRWEB) December 17, 2013 -- With a new year approaching, it’s a time when many begin thinking about resolutions to improve their relationships, mind, body and more. More often than not, people make resolutions to improve their health through promises to hit the gym, increase cardio activity and improve their diet. What many may not realize is how proper oral hygiene can positively affect much of the body and overall well-being.
“As the mouth goes, so goes the rest of the body,” said Dr. Chad Denman, Austin dentist / Round Rock dentist and owner of Family Tree Dental Group. “Poor dental health has been tied to heart disease, memory loss, bodily infection and inflammation, pregnancy complications, pancreatic cancer, higher risk of developing pneumonia and more. Resolutions for better oral healthcare can impact your entire body in many positive ways.”
Resolve to make these good dental habits a priority for 2014:
1. Eat a healthy diet. Proper nutrition is a vital part of any oral healthcare routine. Eating foods with excessive sugars can lead to tooth decay. That includes beverages too! Eliminating sodas and sports drinks not only helps the body lose weight, but it cuts down harmful acids and sugars that wear down the protective enamel of teeth.
2. Brush twice a day. Plaque buildup is inevitable, but patients can avoid it hardening into calculus by brushing twice a day – once in the morning and then also before bed. Using a fluoride toothpaste in brushing will help strengthen teeth too. For best results, don’t forget to change out the toothbrush every three to six months, as well.
3. Floss daily. While many people have no problem brushing twice a day, flossing often slips through the cracks. Unfortunately, the plaque between teeth can’t be cleaned and removed without the use of floss or an inter-dental cleaner. Flossing just once a day will not only help with plaque, it will also toughen up gums to reduce bleeding over time.
4. Quit use of tobacco products. Smoking and tobacco use is associated with an increased risk of oral cancer, periodontal disease, as well as other bodily cancers and health conditions. It can also cause bad breath and yellowed/stained teeth.
5. Regular dental visits. Schedule and keep those twice yearly visits to the dentist. Just because a person isn’t in pain or can’t see any problems doesn’t mean they don’t exist. The dentist has the tools and skills to find hidden issues and potential harms before they become painful and costly. Since the mouth often acts as an early warning sign for bodily problems, well-trained dentists also use regular visits as an opportunity to evaluate patients for systemic (whole body) diseases too.
