Austin Divorce Attorney Tony R. Bertolino Comments On ‘Contagious’ Divorce Report
Austin, TX (PRWEB) December 21, 2013 -- A new study suggesting that the divorce of a close friend or family member dramatically increases your own chances of divorce supports what divorce lawyers in Austin, Texas, have experienced firsthand, according to Tony R. Bertolino, a family attorney at Bertolino LLP.
Pew Research Center (“Is divorce contagious?,” October 21) reported that a Brown University study analyzed three decades of data on marriage, divorce and remarriage. The study revealed that people are much more likely to divorce if a family member or friend is also divorced.
“The U.S. has one of the highest divorce rates in the world, with about 45 percent of marriages ending in divorce. Even though a divorce is not unusual, it’s never an easy decision for a couple,” said Bertolino, who handles family law cases in Austin, TX. “If you are thinking about ending your marriage, you might decide to take the next step and contact a lawyer after you hear about a friend who has gotten divorced. As divorce attorneys, we have seen this type of behavior firsthand. We know that some of our clients have taken action after learning that a friend or family member was recently divorced.”
The Pew Research Center report said that for the study, researchers used data collected between 1971 and 2001 in the town of Framingham, Massachusetts, to draw their conclusions. Over 5,000 men and women between ages 30 and 62 were studied through the use of bi-yearly interviews and examinations.
According to the Pew Research Center article, the study revealed that participants were 75% more likely to become divorced if a friend is divorced and 33% more likely to end their marriage if a friend of a friend is divorced.
Furthermore, the Pew Research Center article said the study revealed divorcees to be more likely to marry somebody else who has been divorced, that divorcees often become less popular as a result of their divorce, and that people with larger social networks were less likely to divorce than people with fewer friends.
“A divorce can have serious emotional and financial consequences for the entire family,” Bertolino said. “From decisions about child custody and alimony, to division of property, a divorce case can be a complex and emotionally taxing legal matter.”
Bertolino said an experienced attorney can help guide someone through each step of the divorce process. He said many cases can be negotiated through mediation and collaborative law efforts to minimize costs and conflicts.
