Australian Mesothelioma Study Highlights Incidence and Survival Trends, According to Surviving Mesothelioma
Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) January 02, 2016 -- A new study conducted in one of the world’s top mesothelioma hot spots finds that the incidence of the disease has leveled off, while survival has improved among some patients. Australia has one of the highest per capita rates of mesothelioma in the world. But researchers at the University of Sydney say the incidence of pleural mesothelioma has not increased in the last decade.
At the same time, the study in the Australia and New Zealand Journal of Public Health finds that people with a particular subtype of mesothelioma have much better survival results than others with the disease.
“Five-year relative survival in 2002-2006 was substantially higher for people with malignant pleural mesothelioma, epithelioid histological subtype (11.7% [95%CI 6.8-18.2%]) compared to all other non-epithelioid histological subtypes (6.9% [95%CI 5.0-9.1%]), a 70% difference,” writes Matthew J. Soeberg, a Research Fellow with the University of Sydney’s Asbestos Diseases Research Institute.
“While a mesothelioma diagnosis is always devastating, this study suggests that the prognosis is better now than it has ever been, especially for people with the most common type of mesothelioma,” says Alex Strauss, Managing Editor of Surviving Mesothelioma.
