A young boy, raised in a Christian home by godly parents, Derek Tong loved to play ball, ski, was an accomplished pianist, and did very well in school. Life was great and Derek’s future was bright until one fateful day. On the way to serve on a mission trip, the bus carrying Derek and 46 others was struck head-on by a truck, killing three, and leaving many injured, but none worse than Derek. Crumpled, disfigured, motionless, and nearly lifeless, Derek survived, but he suffered a severe brain injury. He had to relearn virtually everything: basic skills and motions, thinking, functioning, learning, playing, and so much more. Painfully, slowly, but surely, Derek rebuilt his shattered life, found a future, and fell in love with the wonderful woman with whom he would share his life—Dana. Though their marriage had a fairytale beginning, it soon became a nightmare due to the effects of Derek’s brain injury. That is, until God did a miraculous work in Derek and Dana’s lives and marriage, and love had the last word. As the debate rages over how to prevent concussions in youth sports and the NFL seeks settlement with brain-injured players, traumatic brain injury (TBI) has gained much needed attention from mass media, making this book particularly timely. Scientists are working harder than ever to uncover the exact causes of TBI, as doctors work to develop effective rehabilitation methods and address the issue of physical aggression.
“I would like to awaken people to the reality of brain injuries and encourage victims, their families, and caregivers to persevere through the many challenges, despite the odds. I hope that couples will also take refuge in the fact that physical aggression that results from TBI can be overcome,” says Tong. “There are few qualified resources pertaining to TBI and physical aggression, so my pastor and biblical counselor encouraged me to compose my autobiography, 'Till Death Do Us Part.' My hope is that it would lead to marital harmony and increased social cohesiveness.”
"Till Death Do Us Part" is a tool mental health professionals and counselors can use as a resource for their patients who struggle with TBI, as well as their friends, families, and loved ones. It can also serve as a great help and encouragement to couples struggling with residual issues of TBI, including physical aggression. Most of all, "Till Death Do Us Part" shows that God’s love is greater than any personal tragedy.
Book signings have been scheduled at various locations, as well as readings at Christ-centered bookstores and local libraries, including North Fort Myers Public Library and Riverdale Public Library. Tong was interviewed at Sandman Book Company in Punta Gorda, and is currently pursuing potential promotion and distribution through Family Christian Bookstores.
