Burns shares, “Life is a fantastic journey that we all pass through. Sometimes it is unfair, cruel, and tragic. We all experience its tribulations. The great poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar once described life as ‘an endless pain with a painful end.’ But there also times when life can be grand. The love of family, the joy of children, and the enjoyment of a loving relationship with a special someone are all things that make life worth living. Many people ponder our existence and try to find and understand the meaning of it. Religion provides some understanding and gives some people purpose. Others see life as an aimless exercise without redeeming value that ends all too abruptly. I have a colleague who shares this view of life. Once, as we were discussing the subject, he posed an interesting question. He said, ‘You know, man created God to explain his existence and to give his life meaning. How else can we explain the difficulties, hardships, suffering, and tragedy that we go through? Some people live their entire lives in poverty and pain, and then they die. Would it have been better if they had never been born?’ Life is a gift, and I believe the greatest thing that you can do is to reach out and help somebody who is less fortunate. The redeeming value is in making someone else’s journey easier. I have lived a life of both joy and pain. Like everyone, I have made mistakes, and I have had some regrets. But I wouldn’t want to change how I’ve lived. The relationships I established and the experiences I’ve gone through have given my life a richness that is immeasurable.”
