Mostly found in Guatemalan forests, quetzals are known for their colorful plumage. Legend has it that upon captivity, quetzals suddenly die. For this reason, they are considered as the symbol of liberty and dignity. In the 18th century Yucatan and Mexico, Mayans live in poverty. Oppressed by landowners, they rebel to gain freedom and social justice. Their battle cry is “quetzal.” When war breaks off between Mexico and the United States, the white landowners organize and support the Mayan army against the American people. It is the start of the tragedy.
Set in a hacienda in Merida, the story revolves around the Gutierrez family, a clan of white landowners who live in Yucatan. The family is interlinked with the sad plight of the native people. Amidst hatred and understanding, a love story blossoms between Roman Gutierrez and Joanna, a young American assigned to buy California, Arizona and New Mexico. Can she redeem Ramon and make him a man with a sense of freedom and democracy?

About the Author
Gian Franco Ricci Albergotti was born on July 15, 1944. Belonging to one of Europe's ancient families, Albergotti’s lineages can be traced back to the 10th century. He graduated from the University of Bologna, the oldest university in the world, where he also taught for several years. As a lawyer, his career led him to many important processes. He wrote many legal works, such as essays and articles. He has written about 12 books on legal matters. “Quetzal” is his first published novel. Albergotti lives in Tuscany.
