Author Gozil Oxley Shares Her Story in ‘A Stroke of Providence’
Fresno, Calif. (PRWEB) March 19, 2014 -- According to an article in newschannel5.com, stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S. A stroke caused by a brain hemorrhage is the most devastating. In fact, 75 percent of patients with this type of stroke die. Author Gozil Oxley, RN, Ph.D. reveals her story in “A Stroke of Providence.” This book chronicles her journey over a six-year period during which she undergoes brain surgery and experiences a very difficult recovery period. This experience changed her as a person and strengthened her faith in God.
Through the prompt intervention of the medical and nursing staff at Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, California, she is quickly diagnosed and closely observed during the night, until she could be transferred to a well-known medical center in San Francisco the next day for brain surgery. Prior to her sudden brain hemorrhagic stroke, Oxley knew very little about AVMs. After the brain surgery and a long, debilitating recovery, she was driven to learn as much as she could about them. Her recovery is compounded by her brother’s death. Nevertheless, with her renewed faith in God, she emerges from this ordeal a stronger person, whose life has been forever changed.
There are very few books in which stroke survivors discuss their own experience after having a hemorrhagic stroke. This book may help health professionals in providing support for families, and not only individualized patients. Hearing a patient’s own perspective gives more meaning to the experience. Lives may be saved through increased knowledge of the early signs of a stroke hemorrhagic or otherwise.

About the Author
Oxley is a professor Emerita in Nursing. She taught nursing at Fresno State University for sixteen years. She received a nursing Diploma from Luton and Dunstable Hospital, England. She studied midwifery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, England. Oxley holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nursing from Long Island University, Brooklyn, a Master’s degree in Nursing Education from, New York University, and a PhD in Nursing, from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
