He surprised himself, and the Academy, by graduating, then spent the following twenty-five years in the cockpit as a student pilot, an instructor pilot, and a squadron commander. He is an award-winning F-15 Eagle fighter pilot. After serving in the Air Force, he survived a massive, near-fatal stroke, which left him paralyzed on the left half of his otherwise spectacular body. He wrote his experiences in his second book with one hand while in a wheelchair. He and his wife of over thirty-seven years live in the urban sprawl that is Carrollton, Virginia.
