Author Philama Ductan relates strange, gripping story of ‘No Retaliation!’
NEW YORK (PRWEB) August 29, 2017 -- In the city called Valparaizo readers are initiated into mysteries. There is the mystery of a moonless night. There is the not-so-mysterious struggle to stay afloat amid the debris of consequences derived from decisions that stretch far back into the past. There are also the common human mistakes of arrogance and ignorance that create stigma and lead to ever more stupid things and the belief in these stupid things. There is voodoo and the black arts of vengeance. Philama Ductan knows much about voodoo and knows that most of it comes from vengeful, misguided hearts in search of “No Retaliation!” (published by Xlibris).
Ductan’s strange story is not about crime and bloody justice though. It is, like common physical principles, about reaction and counter-reaction, of cause and effect that few, or no one, among his characters living in a teeming tropical city are very much aware of. It is the about the tragicomedy of voodoo and the misfortune that superstitions bring into life. Such is the case of Kootan who owns a dog named Bulky. The dog coincidentally becomes the woman Shanaz’ savior but is rewarded with crucifixion. With these beginning elements, Ductan leads readers into a maze of human actions that defy logic. How come these people into such straits?
An incantation and a poem that seems to be the subterranean heart of this mysterious enchantment of a book are contained in the frontispiece:
“Hello Darkness!/ Through my blind eye/ I can see two butterflies/ In the shadow of the night/ I can see a rainbow in the sky/ These butterflies wheeze and fly/ I cry, cry, and I do not know why/ Yes! Butterflies wheeze and fly/ The rainbow shines in the sky/ They ought to be you and I”
Others who have condemned the belief in truth, justice and the almighty God have chosen to stay in derelict portions of the city to hone their craft of magical retribution. Kootan needs an intuitive eye, an eye influenced by the Holy Spirit, to pick his way carefully through a jumble of illusions on the way to making the right choices. He needs the eye to survive the unregulated rage spun out of the crazy web of vengeance. The reward is illumination and the right to stand free and strong upon God’s earth. It is, strange as it may seem, the result of “No Retaliation!” and Kootan’s intellect that wrestles with the forces of “No Retaliation!”must make his correct destiny out of flitting shadows that hide God’s true rainbow.
