Author Steve Hallam’s New Book “A World Away” is the Memoir of Perry Hallam, a Young American Diplomat Stationed in the Middle East at the Dawn of World War II.
(PRWEB) April 13, 2017 -- Steve Hallam has completed his new book “A World Away”: an engaging window into the life and career of a young diplomat traveling to and working in the Middle East at the dawn of the Second World War.
Hallam shares, “My father wrote this book when he was twenty-two years old and just starting a career in the Foreign Service of the US State Department at the outset of World War II. Ocean transportation inspired the title of the book along with his thoughts of going, and being, so far away from the places he was familiar with. I remember—years later—how fascinating it was to embark on a ship and to be transported to a completely different land or “world.” He wrote notes in longhand during the day and typed them up periodically, noting the date and usually the time. The book starts with his departure from Washington, DC, and continues through an ocean voyage to Basra, Iraq.
This book also contains a description of street bazaars in Baghdad and his observations while assisting with the Tripartite Conference in Moscow, taken from letters he wrote home. He wrote well, and we exchanged letters for many years—well into the e-mail age. Others who read them remarked about how his writing style—and how his observations—fascinated them. He never published this book, and I didn’t know he wrote it until he showed it to me when I was about forty years old. I transcribed the book and showed it to a few people, who said this should attract interest as a book.
I did not add, remove, or embellish anything in this book, correcting only a few misspellings and punctuation usage. As you read this book, you should perceive the experience of a young man from Pierre, South Dakota, leaving the States for the first time as the United States—and the entire world—entered a time of earthshaking
change. And as people I have talked to who lived through that time were aware, not only was the outcome unknown, many feared for the worst.”
Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, Steve Hallam’s compelling tale provides a first-hand account of life in the Middle East and elsewhere as World War II erupted around the globe.
