The opening night act for the Fillmore East occurred in march of 1968. According to Hawley, “Bill Graham had already opened the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Later in the year, he decided to open the Fillmore East located on Second Avenue and 6th Street in New York City. He picked Janis Joplin and Tim Buckley as the opener acts. Graham hired Charles Brandwynn to design the concert poster. Brandwynn used a picture shot by Linda Eastman of Joplin and Big brother and the Holding Company. It is placed in the center of the poster in a simple black and white layout. (Ms. Eastman married Paul McCartney a year later.) This poster was a stark contrast to the psychedelic posters common in the late 1960s.A forgery of this Fillmore East opening concert has surfaced. The fake features a naked photo of Janis and was printed on cardboard. Brandwynn printed about 200 of the original posters.
