Avoid Data Compliancy Fines with Secure File Transfer and Audit Logging
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 29, 2015 -- OPSWAT, provider of solutions to secure and manage IT infrastructure, today released a new version of Policy Patrol Secure File Transfer, an advanced file transfer solution that allows users to send and receive files instantly and securely. In addition to encrypting files and applying user authentication, Policy Patrol Secure File Transfer now further enhances data security by providing companies with a complete audit trail for each file transfer, aiding compliance and avoiding hefty fines.
Fines for insufficient data security can range from anywhere between $200k (a recent HIPAA fine for a hospital that used a cloud file sharing service) to $3.5 million (the recent Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fine against two telecom companies, TerraCom and YourTel America, for leaving personal information of 300,000 customers exposed on the internet). With the proposed changes to the EU data protection regulations, all EU companies and non-EU companies that process data from EU citizens could soon be facing non-compliance sanctions of up to 1 million EUR.
Regardless of the need to improve data security, many companies are still utilizing unsafe methods such as email and ftp to transfer sensitive data, resulting in possible exposed data and damaging data breaches. “The need for implementing a secure file transfer system to avoid accidental data loss is now more important than ever,” said George Prichici, Product Manager at OPSWAT “Using FTP for file transfers is unreliable, not secure, and offers no audit trail. Email can easily be intercepted which means that any confidential information sent through unencrypted email is at risk of being exposed.”
To minimize the risk of data loss, George Prichici has the following recommendations for safely exchanging sensitive data: ”(1) Companies need to implement a secure file transfer system that allows users to send and receive files securely, utilizing encryption and authentication, (2) sensitive files need to be removed from the system as soon as they are no longer needed, preferably automatically after a specified number of days or downloads, and finally (3) companies must have a cyber security policy in place and provide training to make sure employees understand how to safely handle sensitive data.”
By encrypting files and applying user authentication, Policy Patrol Secure File Transfer protects companies against data loss and helps companies meet regulatory compliance guidelines such as HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, PCI, FCC, and SEC, as well as EU data protection regulations. The new auditing feature now also helps companies substantiate that they meet data security compliance guidelines by providing an audit trail.
