Awaxman Law and Associates Asks, Could Chronic Pain Be Genetic?
Toronto, ON (PRWEB) May 29, 2014 -- According to **research assessed by the American Academy of Neurology on April 17th, 2014, there could be a possible connection between chronic pain and genes. The reason why some people could have a higher pain tolerance than others is genetic.
Chronic pain is pain that lasts for more than 3 to 6 months. It differs from acute pain, which is pain that alerts the body to possible injury. With chronic pain, the pain is persistent and pain signals continually “fire” into the nervous system.
The source of chronic pain can be an injury, a prolonged illness, an ongoing ailment or infection. Chronic pain can even occur without having suffered a specific injury or illness.
Types of chronic pain include fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joint dysnfunction, chronic regional pain syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, or inflammatory conditions like arthritis.
Doctors take a variety of approaches to treating chronic pain including medication, physiotherapy, acupuncture, surgery, psychotherapy. Nerve blocks and trigger point injections are also a treatment that is often recommended for common pain.
The *chronic pain study divided participants into 3 groups based on their perception of pain. The majority of participants fell into the moderate pain perception category, and these numbers closely echoed that number of people who fell into the high pain perception group. The study found that gene variants were common amongst certain pain groups. There were 4 gene variants that were identified. The significance of having identified these gene variants is that it will help doctors to identify their patients’ perception of pain and could assist in developing targeted therapies.
People who suffer from chronic pain may experience a combination of physical and psychological symptoms.
