B&W Sensors Finds Speed Cameras in North St. Louis County Reduce Aggressive Driving by 90 Percent
St. Louis, Mo. (PRWEB) October 30, 2013 -- Driver behavior in North St. Louis County, Missouri where Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) safety cameras are installed is changing according to a recent analysis by B&W Sensors, LLC, a speed detection and traffic monitoring company. B&W found that the number of speeding violations captured by the proprietary Multiple Vehicle Speed Tracking (MVST) system at monitored locations in all eight area municipalities dropped between 67 and 90 percent in just one year after deployment.
Most importantly, the data shows that after one year of camera deployment, the number of issued citations in five of the eight area municipalities dropped even further, with violations decreasing between 84 and 96 percent in school zones, work zones and Travel Safe Zones (TSZs).
“There will always be controversy surrounding the use of speed safety cameras,” said Mark Jackson, President & CEO of B&W Sensors. “The fact is that these cameras work in accomplishing the number one goal of municipal police departments and public officials: they reduce the number of speeders and, therefore, decrease the chances of injuries and death involving vehicles and pedestrians.”
The pre-deployment phases varied for North St. Louis County and took place between Spring 2010 and Winter 2012. Monitored areas include locations that see traffic volume anywhere from 5,800 to 15,800 vehicles per day, with posted speed limits ranging from 20mph to 45 mph. Trigger speeds, which indicate when a citation is issued, also range from 7mph to 11mph over the speed limit. Most cameras are in operation 10 to 12 hours a day, and in all but one North St. Louis County location, the number of speeders who were traveling over the speed limit but not going fast enough to be ticketed decreased as well.
Nationally, over 30 percent of all fatal crashes and incapacitating injuries are caused by excessive speed, with speed related accidents killing more than 1,000 Americans every month. ASE safety cameras like the MVST system in North St. Louis County municipalities bring about behavior changes resulting in more motorists obeying traffic signals and avoiding crashes, injuries and fatalities caused by speeding. Furthermore, studies show that photo enforcement programs result in crash and fatality reductions of 20 percent or more.
