BABALU to Hold Pop Up Taco Shop in Honor of Memphis Resident with Cystic Fibrosis
Memphis, TN (PRWEB) September 26, 2016 -- Coping with a life-threatening disease is difficult. Life centers around clinical visits, treatments, hospital stays, and medical bills. Now, imagine enduring a life-threatening disease as a child.
On Wednesday, September 28, Babalu Tapas & Tacos will host Vega’s Taco Shop. Proceeds from the all-day pop up restaurant will benefit Vega Lowry, a nine-year-old Memphis resident with cystic fibrosis.
“Cystic fibrosis is an inherited life-threatening, genetic disease with no known cure,” explains Vega’s mother, Becky Clark. “It affects mainly the lungs and digestive system. A defective gene causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs, pancreas and other organs. It can result in chronic chest infections and irreversible lung damage and prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients. While major advances have been made in cystic fibrosis research and life expectancies have grown today there is no cure.”
Vega was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at just five days old. Treatments, dozens of medications, hospital stays and medical procedures, while an inconvenience, are a norm for her. However, Vega has not let these interruptions prevent her from pursuing her dreams. A competitive swimmer, Vega completed her first 100IM just two weeks after being released from a lengthy hospital stay.
"We are so excited to honor such a strong and awesome little girl,” says Kyle Maness, general manager of Babalu Memphis. “I could not think of a more deserving family than Vega's to be a part of this year’s Taco Shop. It is such a fun and special event for everyone involved."
BABALU will donate $1 for every taco sold during Vega’s Taco Shop to help alleviate the cost of Vega’s medical expenses.
