Arlington, VA (PRWEB) September 15, 2015 -- September is National Campus Safety Awareness month, and as college students head back to school this fall, many are armed with a new safety tool right in their pocket.
With smartphone technology, students can now communicate directly with campus security at the touch of a button. The LiveSafe campus safety app brings safety into the 21st century, making communication between students and safety officials as easy, discreet, and intuitive as a text. This fall, nearly one million college students in 30 states will have access to LiveSafe.
How It Works
Students download the free app to their phone and are instantly connected to campus safety officials and each other. They can:
- send texts, photos, and videos to campus security over a secure and anonymous connection
- report suspicious or concerning activity anonymously
- look out for friends using the SafeWalk feature as they walk home
- call for a safe ride home from campus security
LiveSafe’s partner institutions range from Ivy League schools like Yale to large universities like Arizona State University and Virginia Tech to smaller, private schools like Washington College and Lynchburg College. Increasingly, corporate and commercial institutions are also benefiting from the LiveSafe communication platform.
At Georgetown University, a student used LiveSafe to discreetly text campus law enforcement when a man exposed himself in the library. Police were able to make a quick arrest based on her tip.
LiveSafe has also been used to directly connect students with mental-health professionals during crisis. The app helps students who might otherwise feel uncomfortable sharing that they are struggling to get the help they need.
As Georgetown’s chief of police said, “The LiveSafe app is really meeting a need on college campus…more and more students feel connected to their campus from a safety perspective, and more and more students will feel that they can reach out to their police department in a very meaningful way. That’s what we want: more students to reach out to us when they have a problem."
With LiveSafe, students and college officials are joining forces to build community and make campuses across the country safer and more connected.
