Backyard Travel Release New Thailand Tour: Amphawa – Thailand’s Historic Floating Market
Bangkok, Thailand (PRWEB) December 19, 2013 -- The authentic overnight tour begins with a picturesque drive to Samut Songkhram Province, a quaint garden-filled region where the River Kwai joins the Gulf of Thailand. While there, travelers can witness one of the unique in-land markets set up over a train line. When the train approaches, the stalls draw back and allow the train to pass before resuming business on the line.
They will also visit The Kha, a local floating market before moving on to a family home that doubles as a coconut sugar syrup factory to see a traditional local business in action – and of course, sample a glass of the sweet nectar.
A brief visit to Amphawa Island is next, to take a leisurely stroll around the isle’s orchards and temples before arriving for the night at a stilted hotel in Amphawa town. After some relaxation time, at night travelers can enjoy a traditional Thai feast at an authentic restaurant on the river before wandering the wooden walkways to investigate the quaint local shops.
Early risers can catch a unique glimpse of floating monks who paddle their way through the canals to collect their early-morning alms the following morning, before enjoying a delightful breakfast to start their day. They will then cruise the canals to the neighboring Ratchaburi Province to visit Damnoen Saduak, one of the most popular floating markets in Thailand, arriving before the tour buses just as vendors set up.
Travelers then float their way back to Amphawa for lunch and have plenty more time to indulge in some souvenir shopping for some unique keepsakes and antique treasures.
On the return journey to Bangkok, travelers can visit Wat Bang Kung, one of the most famous temples in the region before stopping at Rama II Park, built to commemorate the eponymous ‘Poet King’.
“Bangkok was once a network of canals that gave it the nickname ‘Venice of the East’ but nowadays many of them have been filled in making floating markets a seldom seen event in the city center,” said Backyard Travel’s General Manager Maeve Nolan. “Floating markets are a fascinating glimpse into the markets of Thailand’s canal-city past and Amphawa is one of my favorites thanks to its retro feel and vintage authenticity.”
