Backyard Travel Release New Tour: Insiders’ Angkor – Acrobats, Cuisine & Hidden Temples
Bangkok, Thailand (PRWEB) February 21, 2014 -- As well as investigating the most popular temples of Angkor and the so-called ‘lost city’ of Mahendraparvata, travelers will also have the opportunity to see an enigmatic performance at the Phare Circus and take a private cooking class.
The new five-day, four-night tour begins with a scenic guided tour by bicycle to visit some of the city’s main highlights. Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire, is the first stop and offers the opportunity to learn the history of the ancient temple complex from a local Backyard Travel guide.
Travelers are then taken on a guided tour of the former Royal Palace, discovering smaller hidden temples that are rarely visited, before moving to see Ta Prohm temple which featured in the Angelina Jolie movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
The unique Cambodia tour then offers a chance to see legendary Angkor Wat from a 120-merer-high tethered balloon to get an understanding of the layout of the vast complex, followed by a visit to a local market to find an assortment of deep-fried insects on sale.
Day two of the insider tour provides the opportunity to discover the secrets of authentic local cuisine with renowned chef Kathana Dunnet at her beautiful home just outside Siem Reap. Travelers will learn the techniques and ingredients required to prepare a range of easily recreated dishes and then can dine on the resultant feast.
While in the area, travelers will then be taken to visit the nearby Golden Silk Pheach Farm, a silk manufacturer run by Oum Sophea Pheach, which employs more than 100 local staff to produce high quality products.
The following day takes travelers to discover the site of Mahendraparvata, the so-called ‘lost city’ near Phnom Kulen. On the back of a motorcycle, tour-takers will be safely guided around the region to visit Poeng Tbai to see the well-preserved rock carvings of Shiva, Vishnu and Ganesh.
From there the tour moves to Prasat Rong Chen, possibly the most significant site in Cambodian history. It was atop the three tiered pyramid that Jayavarman II declared himself the absolute monarch of Cambodia and renounced the rule of Java.
In the morning of the fourth day, travelers will be led on a guided tour of the legendary Angkor Wat complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most magnificent temple structures in the world.
Rounding off the insider tour of Siem Reap, travelers will then be treated to a unique experience at the Phare Cambodian Circus Show. Before the main event, a Backyard Travel guide will take visitors behind the curtain to see a sneak preview as the artists prepare, and even get the chance to interact with the performers.
After meeting the troupe, travelers will then enjoy dinner at the nearby Phare Restaurant before the curtain comes up and the inspirational hour-long show begins. The performance combines traditional and modern aspects of theatre with something for everyone, mixing dance, music, contortion and acrobatics to tell the story of modern life in Cambodia today.
“The majority of the majestic temples of Siem Reap are well known to all, but sadly few people veer off the well-trodden path to experience the other delights of the local area,” said Backyard Travel’s General Manager Maeve Nolan. “We hope this new Cambodia tour, which includes visits to the newly found Mahendraparvata and outstanding Phare Circus will help to open travelers’ eyes to some of the rarely seen sites of Siem Reap.”
Prices for the new Backyard Travel Cambodia tour start from US$1,030 per person (based on two sharing).
