Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 27, 2014 -- Barkpost.com, an online canine-interest website hosted by Bark & Co., recently named Muffin's Halo an aid for Blind Dogs one of its “11 Must-Have Products to Make Life Easier for Your Special Needs Pup.” The article, written by Nicole Gabriel, ranks Muffin's Halo fourth on its list, citing how the device “acts as a bump guard so your pup doesn't hurt his nose on the coffee table edge.”
The citation for Muffin's Halo comes amidst the nationwide observance of National Animal Safety and Protection Month, described by the PALS Foundation as “an observance to promote the appropriate ways to protect and care for domestic and wild animals and help people strengthen skills for staying safe around animals.” Numerous animal rights organizations, shelters and veterinary societies will be hosting events around the country to promote the protection of animals and education on proper safety and emergency procedures for use with animals both wild and domestic.
Muffin's Halo for Blind Dogs is a device to assist in the guiding of blind dogs and to prevent them from colliding with objects and obstructions, as they make their way through the world. Muffin’s Halo is a 3 piece device (halo, wing and harness) that is light weight and comfortable. The halo extends past the dog's nose, preventing collision with furniture, walls and the legs of the animal's loved ones; the dog's mobility is increased, and with it their confidence and quality of life. The harness is available in a series of “angel wing” designs, along with a “butterfly” design and even a “quarterback” look styled like miniature shoulder pads.
Muffin’s Halo is the creation of Silvie Bordeaux, a Los Angeles-based publicist who designed the device for her 14 year-old toy poodle Muffin after he developed cataracts three years ago. He began bumping into walls and fell down stairs, and became increasingly depressed and unwilling to move about. With the Halo, says Bordeaux, “Muffin now knows his home again and can travel with me to any hotel or friend's house and familiarize any new surroundings quickly. He just loves his halo and is back to his peppy confident self!”
Blindness in dogs can be caused by a number of factors, from cataracts, glaucoma, SARDS and Cushing's disease to progressive retinal atrophy. While these conditions can affect any dog, particularly as they age into their senior years, breeds in which these conditions are more common include Cocker Spaniels, Collies, Irish setters, Labrador Retrievers, Schnauzer, Shih Tzu, Boston Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, maltese and Poodles like Muffin.
In researching and developing Muffin's Halo for Blind Dogs, Bordeaux was “stunned to find out how many dogs are abandoned or put down because they go blind. Muffin’s Halo can now save the lives of many blind dogs! It no longer has to be painful for the dogs and their owners, as I have a great solution to help this transition.”
To further the cause of blind dogs and assist in the improvement of their quality of life, Bordeaux has started “Second Chances for Blind Dogs,” a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that donates Muffin's Halos to shelter and rescue dogs with vision problems. The increased mobility and confidence provided by the Halos helps to improve the dogs' chances of adoption into “forever homes.” Second Chances For Blind Dogs was begun after Muffin got his own second chance, making a miraculous recovery after a mishap during a veterinarian’s aspiration of tissue in his stomach that resulted in an almost deadly laceration, causing him to have life saving surgery.
Bordeaux hopes that events like National Animal Safety and Protection Month will help to bring further attention to Muffin's Halo and to the ways in which it can improve the lives of special-needs blind dogs throughout the country and around the world.
