Barnes-Jewish College honors volunteer's commitment to nursing education
St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) April 28, 2015 -- Barnes-Jewish College Alumni Association recently bestowed Norma Stern with an Honorary Alumni Award at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College’s spring commencement ceremony.
“We honor Norma because of her tremendous commitment to nursing education and her devotion to the college,” says Michael Bleich, PhD, RN, FAAN, president, Maxine Clark and Bob Fox Dean and Professor at Goldfarb. “We are fortunate to benefit from her caring nature and enthusiasm through her work on the college’s board of trustees and through the student scholarship she funds. Norma has a love for life and an infectious spirit. She is an inspiration and a role model. I’m so pleased to be able to honor her for all she does for Goldfarb and the community.”
In 1982, Stern was severely burned in a factory fire. She spent several weeks in the burn unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. She went on to start a support group for burn victims. Stern also joined forces with the St. Louis Fire Department to create the “Alarms for Life” program to install nearly 8,000 smoke detectors in the homes of low-income residents in St. Louis.
Stern’s experience as a patient spurred her interest in volunteering in the health care field. Now a lifetime member of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Auxiliary, Stern also serves on the board of Goldfarb and The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Her involvement has earned her many accolades and recognition, including the President’s Award from Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing, a legacy school of Goldfarb. She is also actively involved in other organizations around St. Louis.
The Barnes-Jewish College Alumni Association established the Honorary Alumni Award in 2014 to honor individuals who did not attend Barnes-Jewish College, or any of our legacy schools, but has demonstrated uncommon and outstanding services, substantial and continuing commitment and loyalty to the College. Stern is the third person to receive an Honorary Alumni Award.
