Baron & Budd Now Accepting NuvaRing Lawsuits
DALLAS (PRWEB) December 20, 2013 -- The national plaintiffs’ law firm of Baron & Budd is now handling lawsuits on behalf of women who have used the contraceptive device NuvaRing, also known as the etonogestrel/ethinyl estradiol Vaginal Ring. Baron & Budd NuvaRing lawyers will represent women who allegedly suffered serious side effects or even died after using the birth control drug.
The NuvaRing, produced by Organon, a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc., is a flexible ring approximately two inches in diameter that is inserted vaginally once a month. The device continuously releases a low dose of hormones to prevent pregnancy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a study in 2011 that found users of NuvaRing were at a higher risk of suffering pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis compared to those who used standard low-dose estrogen birth control pills. “Although the manufacturer allegedly knew or should have known that NuvaRing can cause serious and potentially deadly side effects, it continued to aggressively market the product,” said Russell Budd, managing director of national law firm Baron & Budd. “Our NuvaRing lawyers will fight for the women and their families who have allegedly suffered as a result."
According to Merck's website (http://www.merck.com/product/usa/pi_circulars/n/nuvaring/nuvaring_pi.pdf) NuvaRing (etonogestrel/ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring) contains 11.7 mg etonogestrel and 2.7 mg ethinyl estradiol. When placed in the vagina, each ring releases an average of 0.120 mg/day of etonogestrel and 0.015 mg/day of ethinyl estradiol over a three-week period of use. The device was heavily advertised with the slogan "Break free from the pack," the emphasis being that NuvaRing replaces a daily pack of birth control pills.
A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that vaginal rings like the NuvaRing have a 90 percent greater risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) than birth-control pills with earlier forms of progestin. However, NuvaRing remains on the market today.(http://jfprhc.bmj.com/content/34/4/247.full.pdf+html)
A recent article in Vanity Fair magazine spotlights the risks of NuvaRing and the complexities of pharmaceutical regulation. Currently NuvaRing lawsuits are being consolidated as a multidistrict litigation (In re: NuvaRing Products Liability Litigation, No. 08-md-1964, JPML, Eastern District Missouri).
