Barrier Force DuneCore™ Protects Coastal Communities from Winter Storm Jonas
Lafayette, LA (PRWEB) February 13, 2016 -- Along 12 miles of shoreline — in Staten Island, Long Island and Fire Island — the natural sand dunes destroyed by Sandy were reconstructed with Barrier Force™ DuneCore™ barriers. The DuneCore™ barriers withstood the wind and waves, protecting these areas from coastal flooding.
Joseph Borelli, the New York City Council member whose district includes affected portions of Staten Island, said the DuneCore™ system was effective. “We saw from this past snowstorm, when the storm surge was increasingly high, that the coastal barriers were both necessary and properly working. Thankfully, we did not see any evidence of coastal flooding at these locations,” said Borelli.
The cellular DuneCore™ system features interconnected, trapezoid-shaped sleeves of high tensile strength fabric. Unlike other systems, DuneCore™ barriers can be deployed quickly and efficiently: a five-person crew, working with minimal equipment, can install barriers at the rate of about 200 feet per hour.
When the barriers are installed in rows, they give sand dunes an internal, high-strength core, which absorbs wave impact and stops erosion. Because the system is cellular, damage to one cell does not cause the entire barrier to fail. DuneCore™ systems create significant mass along shorelines and are proven to absorb wave energy and prevent liquefaction of sand.
