A new elegant gastropub, The Barbary Coast, has reopened in the location of the former Old Spaghetti Building (478 Green Street Between Stockton and Grant). This North Beach landmark seats 200 with inside and outside seating, and has the nicest patio in North Beach. The renovation also includes a new 33 ft bar, which is the longest in North Beach, and a great place to watch a sporting event. The Old Spaghetti Factory was originally a pasta factory until 1955, when it was converted to a cafe, cabaret, and restaurant by Frankie Koh. The Italian ambiance of North Beach had long attracted bohemians and artists, and many of the beatnik leaders were associated with the Old Spaghetti Factory. Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey all liked to hang out here.
Tommy Cummings, the General Manager, says. “We are organizing cultural events and hope to bring the tradition of supporting local artists back to North Beach.” The restaurant walls are decorated with paintings by local artist celebre, Jeremy Fish, who has made two paintings for the space as well as designing the logo. Mr Jeremy Fish should need no introduction to locals, as he is San Francisco’s first artist in residency at City Hall and has over 100,000 followers on Instagram.
The cuisine, designed by Executive Chef James Liles and Chef de Cuisine, Riley Harris, has a lot of vibrant southern flavours. Executive Chef James Liles is originally from South Louisiana, and has a strong background in southern cuisine that makes for a splendid brunch menu. There is something for everyone, with dishes priced below, like $10 for the chicken biscuit, while the more affluent customer can choose caviar and champagne from the extensive menu and wine list.
The cocktail’s list menu is designed by Carlo Splendorini, who is former Bar Director for MINA GROUP. The names of the cocktails are dedicated to the heros of beatnik’s literature. For example “The Burroughs”, which is a Splendorini’s variation on a classic Margarita, is named after beatnik author William S Burroughs. There are other cocktails dedicated to famous writers such as Dorothy Parker, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. For brunch, The Bloody Mary, served with a variety of pickles for additional fee like bamia or asparagus, is especially popular.
The restaurant is open for dinner from 5 to 11 on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday the hours go to midnight. On Saturday and Sunday brunch service starts at 10:30 and goes until 2:30. The patio is closed from 10PM to accommodate the neighbors, but it is open for brunch service and for early dinner. The space is also available for private events and has a separate banquet room.
