Beckwood Press Delivers a Custom Hydraulic Press for Hot Forming Titanium
Saint Louis, MO (PRWEB) February 11, 2014 -- Beckwood Press Company, a leading manufacturer of custom hydraulic presses and automation systems, and the Triform line of sheet hydroforming presses, has built and delivered a new 75 Ton Hot Forming Press for Ducommun AeroStructures, in Coxsackie, NY.
Ducommun AeroStructures engineers and manufactures contoured aero-structure components which require unique processes for molding composite parts and strong metal alloys. Ducommun contracted with Beckwood to manufacture a press which offers the high temperatures required to efficiently form Titanium, coupled with precision press control for outstanding accuracy and repeatability.
Beckwood delivered a press capable of 1600°F that provides multiple zones of heat control for ultimate temperature uniformity. The even distribution of heat into the forming process increases the malleability of the Titanium, while reducing springback. The press’ heat efficiency is aided by an automatic, insulated door system which facilitates part and tool loading, while maintaining the desired temperature set point.
Also integrated into the press are precision hydraulic and controls technologies which give Ducommun exceptional control over the forming process. Beckwood’s Active Leveling System (ALC) maintains a 0.002” bed-to-ram parallelism, despite off-center loading due to part geometry or warped tooling. Pressing speed was critical to Ducommun’s forming efforts as well, so Beckwood allowed for pressing speed control, via the HMI, down to 0.25 inches per minute. Operators can then save all heat and press control parameters, per part, via Beckwood’s included recipe function.
“We are excited to deliver this new Hot Forming Press, and are confident the technologies Beckwood has included will increase Ducommun’s capabilities,” said Beckwood President, Jeffery Debus. “Beckwood is known for making custom machines developed specifically for our client’s needs; and this project was no exception. We listened and understood Ducommun’s requirements, and manufactured a press that checked all the necessary boxes.”
