Benedictine University Adds Epidemiology Certificate to Online Programs

Lisle, IL (PRWEB) September 03, 2014 -- Public health workers rely on health data including biostatistics to help mitigate the occurrence and risk of disease and injuries. The new online Epidemiology Certificate focuses on providing students with the skills to research information, analyze it and ultimately act on it to create effective public health programs and processes.

The four-course online Epidemiology Certificate is available both as a set of electives within the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accredited Master of Public Health program or on its own. Coursework brings together the interdisciplinary skills needed to successfully prevent negative health outcomes.

Students learn to:

  • Utilize statistical methods to address, analyze and solve public health threats.
  • Acquire skills in statistical and epidemiological software applications including Excel, SPSS, SurveyMonkey, and EpiInfo.
  • Study patterns of illness and injury in populations to prevent and control health problems.
  • Apply fundamental research principles and methods to identify and study potential public health issues.
  • Develop a survey method, collect and analyze data, and develop and communicate findings clearly to both professional and lay audiences.

As the availability of health data grows due to improved technology and increased accuracy of electronic medical records, trained epidemiologists are in demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for epidemiologists is expected to rise 10 percent from 2012 to 2022. Organizations that employ epidemiologists include state and local health departments, federal government agencies, private health care organizations, nongovernmental agencies and medical charities.
