Best Base Layer Review Announced by OutdoorGearLab

Review Editors chose the following winners after exhaustive running in the Pacific Northwest, Yosemite, Moab and skiing in the Rockies. Ten shirts were worn in side-by-side showdowns to figure out what was the best in the following categories: warmth, breathability, comfort and fit. We tested both Merino wool models as well as synthetic ones. OGL formerly called this category the performance shirt category but it is also often referred to as a running shirt or long underwear) All the contenders tested got the job done but many performed better overall and in specific situations. The value and price also factored in heavily to our decisions.

It is both a good value at the register, and a good long-term value because of Patagonia's awesome warranty."
Smartwool Midweight Crew winner of the Top Pick award for 2013. This award is given to a product that is best at a specific application. In this case, this was the more durable baselayer. According to Phleger, "This is the workhorse of the base layers that we put in our showdown on the ski slopes and on the trails. It took thrashing better than most other base layers which is a good thing when spending hundred dollars on a shirt."
