Best-Selling Author, Alexandra Fuller Discusses the Dangers of the Media Simplifying Her New Book into a Divorce Memoir on Maria Menounos' Book Circle Online
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 09, 2015 -- Alexandra Fuller is the author of the NY Times best-selling memoirs, Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight and Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness. She sat down with Jeffrey Masters on Maria Menounos' online broadcast network Book Circle Online to promote her new book, Leaving Before the Rains Come, and warned against simplifying her new book into a "Divorce Memoir".
On her new book being more than a divorce memoir:
"We've become used to bumpersticker ways of explaining ourselves to each other because we have a 140-character attention span...We're going to lose nuance if we do that. It also makes us less subversive if we're able to just slap a bumpersticker on it."
On growing up in a racist family in Zimbabwe, and fighting against that:
"So much of my stories are cautionary tales around not believing everything that your parents, your government, your schools, and your churches tell you."
On this book being a "love letter" to herself:
"This book becomes about a woman who realizes that she can't be prey to someone else's disappointment for the rest of her life. If I'm going to be in possession of my voice, I need to first be in possession of my mind, and I'm not going to be in possession of my mind if what has smothered my mind is the voice in my head saying 'You're not enough.'"
On her African identity being challenged because she is white:
"I'm constantly being challenged in a way that no one would dare challenge a black African woman... This is a story about letting go of that, all of that."
