The report finds a small notification button in the corner of the screen is the single most effective notification method. Rather than using a large notification slider, it found a small button to be more warmly received by the user, many of whom said they preferred a small icon because it did not distract or obscure their field of vision on the page.
However, the study also pegs a full width notification slider as the second most effective method of notifying users about the cashback amount. Recognising the conflict between one and two, Valery Kuznetsov, Key Projects Manager at Besttoolbars said, “There was a real split between users with some being against a full wide notification and others very much for. It comes down to person preference and what the user gets accustomed to seeing. Although a full width slider was disliked by some for the space it takes up, others were well used to this method of notification and welcomed the familiarity.”
A narrow notification slider was third on the list. Although still larger than the small option, it is also less obtrusive that the full width slider and offers a streamlined appearance. Valery Kuznetsov added, “This option is more appealing to users who do not like plugins to intrude into their browsing experience too much, while at the same time the notification is still noticeable enough to make sure that each of your plugins users will not forget to use your cashback code.”
A sidebar displayed on either the left or right side of the screen took penultimate place on the list while a flashing plugin icon was fifth. In sixth place was SERP injection; unlike the top five methods which are displayed as the shopper is on the merchant site, the search engine results page option is used to display an icon next to an affiliated merchants listing on major search engines such as Yahoo, Bing and Google.
