BET’s Being Mary Jane star Robinne Lee Appears on Black Hollywood Live's Network and Discusses Gabrielle Union, Oscar Nominations, and Who She Would Love to Work With
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 23, 2013 -- (blackhollywoodlive.com) Robinne Lee, actress and co-star of BET’s highly anticipated series “Being Mary Jane”, appeared on Maria Menounos' Black Hollywood Live network's “Portraits” show, a weekly interview series hosted by Derrial Christon, Courtney Stewart, and Jesse Janedy. On the show, Lee discusses working with close friend and soon-to-be bride Gabrielle Union. She says, “We had a blast. It was really lovely. It’s like playing with your sister. Like playing dress up with your sister”.
She talks working with creator Mara Brock Akil and filming intense scenes with co-star Omari Hardwick. Lee states, “She is like superwoman. Like she’s beautiful, she’s got a great marriage. She’s got two cute kids. She’s an incredible writer. She’s smart, like there is nothing this woman cannot do. She has created a project that I’m so proud to be a part of and she’s written it so well and multi-layered and multi-faceted.”
“Mara said to me, ‘When I watch those scenes its like jazz.’ And I really feel like that’s what it was. We had such an incredible time tearing each other up and ripping each other apart and loving each other…all within a scene, over and over again.”
With Oscar Awards season around the corner and the excitement for films with a leading black cast such as: “Fruitvale Station”, “12 Years A Slave” and “The Butler”, Lee discusses her viewpoint on the films' themes saying, ”I would love to see more films be considered for Oscars that we're not just telling... Oh we are the help, oh we are obese and beating our children, oh we are getting killed at a station, oh we are slaves….There are people of color doing wonderful things and achieving great heights and I would like to see that portrayed and awarded.”
Lee has worked with top actors in the entertainment business from Will Smith, Don Cheadle, Tyler Perry, Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo, but when asked who she would still love to work with she says, “Oh Denzel! I have not met Denzel [Washington]. Which is kind of crazy because I’ve been in Hollywood so long and black Hollywood is only so small you at least see everyone eventually at a party or something and I’ve never even seen Denzel in person. The irony is that Denzel’s mom was my mother’s hairdresser for years and did my mother’s hair for her wedding.”
“Being Mary Jane” premieres Jan 7th on BET at 10pm!
