Beth Israel, Harvard Medical School Select Firefly’s Portable Medical Camerasfor Ongoing Disaster Medicine Efforts
Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 23, 2014 -- Digital otoscopes and digital dermatoscopes produced by Firefly Global of Belmont, MA (http://www.FireflyGlobal.com) have been selected by the BIDMC Fellowship in Disaster Medicine Program for ongoing treatment of disaster victims in Haiti and other regions. Firefly is the leading provider of wireless digital magnifying cameras with real-time 30FPS video transmission. The Fellowship Program is affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital, and is designed to provide qualified emergency physicians the opportunity to develop expertise in Disaster Medicine and Emergency Management.
Firefly's digital otoscopes (used for ear examinations) and digital dermatoscopes (used for examining skin) work well in disaster field work because they are small, easily portable, can be attached to a laptop computer to produce instant visuals, snapshots, and video, and are natively suited for telemedicine applications. The equipment enables physicians and relief workers to project magnified images or video of inner ears and skin onto a computer screen, to email the images or video to physicians around the world, and even to provide live feeds of examinations to specialists in other locations. Disaster victims sometimes suffer from diseases or parasites that are unfamiliar to American aid workers.
BIDMC Fellowship in Disaster Medicine is designed to provide qualified emergency physicians the opportunity to develop an expertise in the related fields of Disaster Medicine (DM) and Emergency Management (EM). The Fellowship Program chose Firefly’s DE500 Digital Video Otoscope, a special purpose digital video camera combined with a high magnification lens and multiple ultra-bright LEDs. The camera delivers up to 50x magnification and streams high quality live video at 30fps to a computer or TV. Field workers also use the DE300 Digital Dermatoscope (Dermascope), a special-purpose digital camera combined with a high magnification polarizing lens and multiple ultra-bright LEDs.
According to Kapriel Karagozyan, CEO of Firefly Global, “Our medical cameras enable visiting disaster medicine workers to carefully review images of tissue damage, parasites, infections, or debris in the ears or on the skin. Not only does this help them handle emergencies in the field, it gives them the opportunity to email snapshots of difficult cases or even provide video or live exam feeds to specialists who can assist with diagnoses to speed treatment in a telemedicine setting.”
The non-profit organization Be Like Brit, which operates a 19,000 square foot orphanage in Haiti built in memory of Lynn University’s Britney Gengel, who perished in the 2010 Haiti earthquake, has also selected Firefly’s equipment. Scott Johnson, director of communications of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, said, “Firefly has created great tools to provide telemedicine consultations from the Be Like Brit orphanage in Haiti to doctors anywhere around the world. We were able to transmit images of the tympanic membrane with the digital otoscope with such clarity that you could see the blood vessels as clearly thousands of miles away as if you were there in the exam room.”
