• Coughing and Smoking – Smoking any substance ultimately leads to coughing, which exerts a lot of pressure on the abdomen and can lead to or worsen a hernia, Dr. Towfigh notes. Patients who cough incessantly for any reason are ultimately increasing their risk for inguinal hernia, and it is advised that they aggressively treat any sort of cough in order to lessen this risk.
• Exercise –While, as discussed above, certain kinds of exercise can cause hernias, the right kind of physical activity can prevent it. Dr. Towfigh explains that scientific evidence shows that, if core abdominal muscles are strengthened through exercise, the risk of hernia can be dramatically reduced. She notes that yoga and pilates are particularly good ways to increase these muscle groups, not to mention sit-ups, pull-ups, weight training, and many other forms of exercise. Generally, when Dr. Towfigh diagnoses patients with hernias, she advises them to continue their exercise routines in order to keep the abdominal muscles strong. However, she notes that no changes in one’s exercise routine should be made without the supervision and expertise of one’s primary care physician.
