BIG Staues Awarded Person of the Year 2014

Today the Sun-Gazette concludes its annual Person of the Year series. Six finalists were spotlighted each day of the past week. Today we salute the Bases Loaded team as our 2014 Person of the Year
Big Statues biggest project to date was received in Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series. In 1939, a group of young baseball players stepped onto a field, which started little league baseball in the United States. In 2014, the little league world series celebrated their 75th anniversary. The committee wanted something that would last forever to remember the history and roots of where little league baseball started.
The project took years of fundraising through Jason Fink, Williamsport Chamber of Commerce vice president, and planning from the committee. Once Matt Glenn of Big Statues got the go ahead, they worked thousands hours to get every detail perfect. “There are representations from early baseball, as early as ‘40s and ‘50s, all the way up to 2000s,” Glenn said. The 10 statues follow the history of baseball, incorporating players from around the world. Each one comes with specifications that depict what was happening during the era, such as patches for the league’s very first sponsors. “Every detail you see is something that actually happened,” Glenn said. “You’ll see a 42 out there representing Jackie Robinson.”
The custom bronze baseball statues were placed on the corners of an intersection in South Williamsport, PA. Home plate will be on one corner. First base will be across the street, and there will be two or three players on each corner representing a baseball diamond. As you’re driving through the intersection, you’ll see a home run being hit and baseball players interacting.
Vince Matteo, chamber president and CEO said "the statues mean a lot to the community” reported Alyssa Maneval, Williamsport Sun-Gazette. "It adds a lot," Matteo said. "We don't forget our roots and the history."
"I had seen bronze statues before in other cities," she said. "To see how they incorporate the bases and the markings on the streets and how they captured all the essence of the players - Challenger, softball, international - it was truly talented work,” said Gilmour.
The custom bronze statues have created a new found interest in the downtown area and many of the Williamsport citizens have expressed how pleased they are with the final project. Williamsport, Pa is the gathering place for the annual Little League World Series tens of thousands of fans and tourist visit every year.
