Billionaire Marijuana Legalization Advocate Peter Lewis Dies Age 80
Commerce,CA (PRWEB) December 27, 2013 -- On Nov 23rd 2013 billionaire Peter Lewis passed away from natural cause’s just days after celebrating his 80th birthday. He was known to the world as the chairman of Progressive Insurance, but Lewis was also a well-known advocate for drug law reform specifically for the legalization of marijuana. Lewis was born in Ohio and rose through the ranks of Progressive Insurance from an underwriter all the way to CEO, a position he held until 2000.
Peter Lewis was a high profile member of the marijuana legalization movement, and during the 2012 election Lewis spent nearly 3 million to aid the passage of legislation in Washington and Massachusetts. It is estimated by the National Center for the Reform of Marijuana Laws that Lewis spent over 40 million dollars in funding for the cause throughout his career. "We have lost a true progressive," a company spokesman for A&A Packaging in California said "Mr. Lewis firmly believed that our drug laws were outdated and inconsistent with the promise of a free people, and he was a long-time advocate of the freedom of people to safely and responsibly use marijuana without the threat of incarceration. Progressive wasn't just the name of his company, but the core of his beliefs."
Since the 1980s Lewis has been on the forefront of the marijuana legalization movement in the United States and admitted to using marijuana to treat pain from a partial amputation after suffering from an incurable infection in his left leg. He told his story in a 2011 issue of Forbes magazine, expressing that "Everything that has been done to enforce these laws has had a negative effect with no results ... I'm amazed that anyone could oppose marijuana for medical use." He battled for this on a state by state basis, never hesitating to fund legislation and initiatives that would advance the legalization of medical marijuana. Mr. Lewis was a tireless advocate of marijuana legalization and continued in this work up until his passing on Saturday the 23rd of November.
"The entire medical marijuana industry mourns the passing of Peter Lewis." A spokesman for A&A Packaging said on Monday "It is a new industry dedicated to giving patients an alternative to treat their suffering, and he was a man of integrity and compassion who stood up for those patients. The industry would not be where it is today without the efforts of Mr. Lewis."
