Billroy Powell shares insights about ‘SETTLING IN CANADA’
Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) September 19, 2014 -- According to author Billroy Powell, the country of Canada reconsidered its immigration laws and policies and opened the way for West Indians including Jamaicans to immigrate after World War II. He added that during the 1950s and 1960s, many Jamaicans, especially nurses, domestic workers and students entered Canada and subsequently became permanent residents and eventually Canadian citizens.
From a historical perspective, “SETTLING IN CANADA” (published by Xlibris) provides insights into understanding the psyche of Jamaicans migrating to and settling in Canada in search of a better and more prosperous life. It shares a classic account of the Jamaican experience settling in Canada over a period of five decades starting from the 1950s and lasting until the 2000s. Divided into five chapters, three of which encompass interviews with individuals who immigrated to Canada, each of the three chapters covers a 20 year period: the 1950s and 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and the 1990s and after.
“The stories in this book are authentic. They captured the description of the interviewees’ own words in a face to face interview. I also have an excellent command of the history of the Jamaican people because I am a Jamaican myself who has been living in Canada for more than 25 years,” says the author.

About the Author
Billroy Powell is a senior policy analyst with the Ontario Public Service. Previously, he worked with the Toronto District School Board, North York Community House and the Jamaican Canadian Association. A teacher by profession, Powell has maintained good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers. Before immigrating to Canada in 1989, he taught Physical and Health Education and Spanish in Cuba and Jamaica respectively. Powell speaks Spanish, French and Jamaican Patois. A graduate of York University and the University of Toronto, this is his first attempt at publishing a book. He however has published several journal articles relating to higher education.
