Irvine, CA (PRWEB) August 19, 2015 -- According to an August 13, 2015 article in Marin Independent Journal, a dead bird recently found in Pleasant Hill, CA tested positive for West Nile virus. This marked the third infected bird found in Contra Costa County this season. The state’s drought draws birds and mosquitoes together in the same watering holes, creating the ideal situation for birds and mosquitoes to become infected with the virus. Birds harbor the virus, and when mosquitoes bite the birds, they pick up the virus. Those mosquitoes then pass it on to humans.
Last year, 26 birds tested positive for the virus. In 2006, two people in Contra Costa County died from the virus. In the last decade, 54 people in the county were diagnosed with the disease, which can cause fatigue, back pain, swollen lymph nodes and fever, as well as head and body aches, In some cases, the disease can cause convulsions and partial paralysis. Alarmingly, many of those infected with the virus show no symptoms.
Bird B Gone now offers several highly effective deterrents to keep birds away from standing water and watering holes, areas where they are prone to be infected by mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus. These deterrents include:
Bird Spikes
Birds usually perch on a structure above a puddle or watering hole before swooping down to the water. Stainless Steel Bird Spikes are anti-perching, anti-roosting bird control devices that won’t allow birds—especially larger birds, like crows, pigeons and gulls—to perch. Bird Spikes won’t harm birds or installers. They’ve been approved by a number of humane groups—including the U.S. Humane Society, as well as the GSA. Bird Spikes come in a variety of types and sizes. The spiked strips are available in two-foot sections, with up to 40 spikes per foot. They come in 1-, 3-, 5- and 8-inch splay widths to provide increasingly wider areas of protection—up to 10 inches wide. They feature a patented “bend-and-crush” design, so the spikes remain firmly embedded in an unbreakable UV-protected polycarbonate base. The spiked strip’s flexible base can bend a full 360 degrees, which means it can easily “follow” a variety of curved mounting surfaces.
Sonic Bird Deterrents
Ideal for deterring as many as 22 different species of birds, Bird B Gone’s Solar Bird Chase Super Sonic protects large outdoor areas from crows and many other pest birds. The device broadcasts distress and predator calls that intimidate birds, fully exploiting their natural alertness and sensitive hearing. Users can set the device to deter a specific bird or leave it on a "general" setting to cover multiple bird species. These sounds are played every ten minutes to keep alerting birds of danger. A volume control varies the output intensity between 65-105 decibels, and users can program the device to turn on/off at night. Unlike ultrasonic devices, the Bird Chase device emits sounds birds can actually hear. The unit is powered by sustainable solar energy for efficient daylight operation, and it includes rechargeable batteries for operation during nighttime. Being solar powered means it can easily be placed wherever birds flock.
