Black Cube, Denver’s New Nomadic Contemporary Art Museum Announces Inaugural Class of Artist Fellows
Denver, CO (PRWEB) September 21, 2015 -- Black Cube, Denver’s newest nomadic, contemporary art museum announced that its first class of artist fellows will include Desirée Holman from Oakland, CA, Chad Person from Albuquerque, NM, and Derrick Velasquez from Denver, CO. Black Cube’s fellowship program is a uniquely designed program for today’s artists which focuses on producing a site-specific exhibition, Art Objects for its museum shop, and supporting the artist holistically by providing professional development guidance. The program provides artists with individualized career support catered to each artist’s goals and needs.
Black Cube already announced that artist fellow, Desirée Holman, will be featured at its official launch event taking place on October 1 at Red Rocks. Chad Person and Derrick Velasquez have both already begun their Black Cube fellowship and are currently working on projects that will be revealed before the end of 2015.
Without a permanent exhibition space, Black Cube prefers to be defined by the art and artist fellows that it presents and supports. All projects begin with the artist ideas, and from there, each art experience builds organically based on their concepts.
“Our Artist Fellow program seeks to nurture the careers of artists by not only providing a platform for their work, but by also guiding them through a process of reflection and analysis of their art practice to better position them for a successful, longstanding career as an artist,” said Black Cube executive director and chief curator, Cortney L. Stell.
Desirée Holman: Living and working in Oakland, California, Holman’s multi-sensory work positions theatrical tools, such as costumes or props, in settings that illuminate ideas of identity, knowledge, and the complexities of the human psyche. Holman holds a Master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Earning critical acclaim for her work, Holman was awarded a San Francisco Modern Museum of Art SECA Award in 2008, and in 2007, was awarded the Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue award.
Chad Person: With work exhibited and collected widely on a national scale, Chad has had solo shows in New York, Denver, Marfa, and Los Angeles. Person's work employs an array of mediums to illustrate concepts of cultural dominance, community, consumerism, and Manifest Destiny. Person is no apologist, and his critiques are bluntly critical. His inflatable sculptures offer uniquely themed portraits of retired or soon-to-be retired cultural icons. Furthermore, his widely exhibited currency collages indict the wastefulness of the military industrial complex and fragility of the American Dream. AOL.com named him “the most paranoid man in America” for his RECESS project, an attempt to build his own survival shelter and repurpose household items into essential survival tools.
Derrick Velasquez: Born and raised in Lodi, California and currently living in Denver, Colorado, he received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from Ohio State University in 2008 and also holds dual undergraduate degrees in Art History and Studio Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Velasquez works in media including performance, installation, sculpture, and photography. Derrick is a founding member and co-manager at TANK Studios, the founder of the YE$ M’am grant for artists, and a board member of the Art-Plant Artist Residency. He currently teaches in the Fine Arts departments at Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Denver.
