BlueLight App Bolsters Campus Safety at Minnesota State University Moorhead
Moorhead, Minnesota (PRWEB) March 18, 2015 -- At a moment when the eyes of the nation have been turned to the shortcomings of mobile 911 and the ongoing crisis in safety on college campuses, Minnesota State University Moorhead has embraced a new mobile solution. Safety company BlueLight has joined forces with the administration and Department of Public Safety to bring the functionality of blue light emergency phone towers directly into students’ hands.
The BlueLight app, available for free on iOS and Android, allows students to contact the Department of Public Safety in an on-campus emergency. By pressing the Request Help button on the MSUM campus, they are routed directly to a DPS dispatcher, along with their exact location and contact information. Off campus, the call routes to 911, displaying the caller’s location on the screen to read off to dispatchers. The call also triggers an SMS alert to emergency contacts, including a link to the caller’s location on a map.
Shane Kelly, Parking and Key and Access Coordinator at the Department of Public Safety, spearheaded the effort to bring BlueLight to campus. “BlueLight seems like the perfect addition to our security infrastructure,” he explains. “Knowing that the customer is moments away from help is comforting, especially with a system that has been proven to be effective.”
A company founded on the ideal of empowerment through safety, BlueLight has a precedent of success partnering with Marquette University, a private university in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where 1 in 5 students has installed the app. In addition to its emergency utility, BlueLight also allows users to share location with friends and family with a feature called On My Way, promoting peace of mind while on the road or walking alone. Dozens of campuses nationwide are currently equipped with BlueLight, including ski resorts and corporate campuses that include EA and Nvidia. New campuses can be added upon request.
