Organized by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), Spring Aboard is a national campaign to encourage boaters to take a boating course before the start of the summer boating season. It is the first ever national campaign designed specifically to promote boating education.
“Taking a boating course is one of the best things boaters can do to ensure that a fun time on the water doesn’t end in tragedy. It is why many states require boating safety education,” said Eleanor Mariani, President of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. “NASBLA hopes the Spring Aboard national campaign will result in more boaters completing a boater education course and using that knowledge to boat safely on the water.”
Recent statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard show just how important boating education is. In 2013, there were 301 boating fatalities where it was known whether or not the operator of the vessel had taken a boating safety course. In 241 of those fatalities, or 80% of cases, the operator had no boating education.
