Bob Quick’s Journey Starts Sept. 2; Heart Patient Hopes to Raise $1 Million for 4 Charities
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 03, 2013 -- Bob Quick of Roy, Utah has the heart of a champion — even if that same heart has quit on him twice before and now sports 16 stents and a pacemaker/defibrillator. The goal for Bob Quick’s Journey: successfully bicycle cross-country from San Diego, California to St. Augustine, Florida with his son, Conrad Quick.
They’ll follow the Southern Tier Bicycle Route (3,070 miles), pulling over 400 pounds between their supplies and bike trailers. No one has ever completed a ride of this length with congenital heart disease and the types of heart procedures that Bob has experienced.
Bob, at age 53, wants to be the first. His motto: “If You Don’t Believe, You’re a Fool!” His goal: raise $1 Million for deserving charities and get people up off the couch, making healthy lifestyle changes.
By just looking at Bob, you’d think that the heavily muscled, lean man in front of you is a picture of health. He is now, to the extent he can be. Not so much in September 2004 when he had his first heart attack due to a hereditary heart condition. After being shocked back to life (by members of the Roy City Fire Department), he literally changed his life by incorporating healthy eating and exercise habits.
All proceeds from Bob Quick’s Journey will go to the McKay-Dee Hospital Foundation (where he’s had his many heart procedures), Primary Children's Medical Center, Special Olympics Utah, and the Roy City Fire Department — all 501-C3 nonprofit organizations. Bob and Conrad plan to travel 50 miles a day and expect the journey will take them approximately 12 weeks because of Bob’s heart condition. Regular accommodations for the two have been arranged at fire stations along the way, thanks to Troy and Marla Easton of the Roy City Fire Department.
Bob will leave San Diego on September 2 at 7 a.m. from the Bike Path at Dog Beach. Bob will be taking donations and posting on social media all along the way. The Southern Tier Bicycle Route runs through 8 states: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri and Florida.
