Body Language Guru Michael C. Anthony Reveals How GOP Presidential Candidates Sent Subliminal Messages During the Recent Debate
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) August 26, 2015 -- Michael C. Anthony recently appeared on a nationally syndicated talk show to reveal what’s really going on when presidential candidates gesture. Such tell-tale “tells” are a key component of his book “Body Language Secrets: How to Read Minds by Reading Bodies” (http://michaelcanthony.com/corp).
Anthony appeared on “Daytime,” a syndicated program hosted by Jerry Penacoli, Cyndi Edwards, and Jenn Holloway. It airs in more than 140 cities, including New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Nashville. Here’s a link to the clip featuring Anthony: http://wfla.com/2015/08/17/body-language-of-the-republican-candidates.
A serious student of body language long before he wrote his successful book, Anthony watched with interest the Republican debate moderated by Fox News at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, OH, home of Lebron James and the Cavaliers. In a recent blog, Anthony noted that such debates give voters “an opportunity to discover what some of our presidential wannabes have to say with their bodies.” The post can be found at http://michaelcanthony.com/corp/political_debates_and_taking_up_space.
Anthony points out the study of “body language” began with the Nixon-Kennedy debate on Sept. 26, 1960.
“Polls showed that 50 percent of Americans who watched the debate on television thought Kennedy won the debate by wide margins,” Anthony noted. “The other half of Americans that listened to the debate on the radio thought Nixon won by wide margins.”
Why the discrepancy?
“Non-verbal communication,” Anthony said. With makeup and smooth gestures, Kennedy communicated much better than Nixon, who declined makeup and appeared to scowl.
The GOP debate in Cleveland featured two gestures that over the years have become standard political techniques: “Taking Up Space” and “The Modified Finger Point.”
“Taking Up Space is just that,” Anthony said. “When we spread our arms in wide movements and gestures, we are telling the world we are powerful, charismatic and confident in our own abilities.”
The body language guru described it as “an authoritative power pose,” one that Superman or Wonder Woman might use.
Then there is “The Modified Finger Point,” where the forefinger and the thumb touch. Unlike the standard finger-point, which makes people feel like they’re getting scolded, the MFP is not used to show contempt or assign blame, but merely emphasize.
Of particular significance in the Aug. 6 face-off were two gestures made by Donald Trump: One, the chop-wave of the arms, was Trump’s way of saying he is “cutting through the nonsense.” The other, indicating a possible “crack in the armor,” took place when Trump gently took hold of the microphone, a move Anthony described as a “self-soothing gesture,” like a child might use in reaching for his mother’s hand.
Keep all that in mind while watching Trump and the other candidates in the upcoming debates:
