Boston Auto Accident Lawyer Mark E. Salomone Comments On Fatal Rear-End Accident Caused By Distracted Driver
Boston, MA (PRWEB) October 28, 2013 -- Boston personal injury lawyer Mark E. Salomone of the Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone today said the recent conviction of a tow truck driver on a charge of vehicular homicide should serve as a warning to all motorists about the extreme danger of distracted driving.
Salomone commented on a news story in The Daily Item (“Driver guilty in 2010 fatal Lynn crash,” Sept. 24) about a deadly rear-end accident that was linked to distracted driving and speeding.
“Many people might think injuries in rear-end auto accidents are minor, but this story illustrates just how horrific a rear-end crash can be,” said Salomone, whose law firm represents victims of negligence and families who lost loved ones in accidents. “Rear-end car collisions are the most common type of car accident, but they are preventable. Drivers need to avoid distractions and stay focused.”
A tow-truck driver formerly of Lynn, MA was sentenced on Sept. 23 to one year in jail for causing a fatal, rear-end accident in Lynn in 2010, according The Daily Item. The driver who caused the fatal, rear-end car accident failed to stop at a red light, crashing into the car in front of him and setting both vehicles on fire, The Daily Item reported.
The tow-driver driver admitted he was distracted by an onboard computer system in his vehicle at the time of the accident, according to the news article.
Salomone said distracted driving has become one of the most common causes of rear-end accidents in recent years, in part because more people are using smartphones and other electronic devices behind the wheel. Every 12 seconds, someone is involved in a rear-end accident in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That’s nearly 2.5 million rear-end car accidents every year. Rear-end collisions account for 41 percent of all car accidents nationwide, according to the NHTSA.
In 2011, a total of 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, compared to 3,267 distracted driving fatalities in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An additional, 387,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver in 2011, according to the CDC.
Salomone said he urges drivers to consider the consequences of dangerous driving behavior, such as distracted driving, speeding or driving while impaired. He said parents should talk to their children about developing safe driving habits. Teenagers, he said, tend to do more texting than adults.
“Over the past several years, cellphones and other technology, such as onboard navigation systems, have become factors in rear-end accidents,” Salomone said. “Even the safest driver can become a victim of an accident. If you or a loved one is injured in an accident, or you lose a loved one in an accident, you will need a personal injury lawyer who can protect your rights. An attorney can help a victim pursue compensation and closure after an accident and send a message that negligent behavior will not be tolerated.”
