Boston Children’s Museum Announces Program to Reduce Summer Learning Loss and Engage Parents in Their Children’s Learning
Boston, MA (PRWEB) June 18, 2015 -- Boston, MA - June 18, 2015 - Boston Children’s Museum has partnered with the Boston Public Schools Department of English Language Learners and BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) to offer the Always Learning program, a Museum-based informal learning program for English language learners. The Always Learning program provides fun learning activities utilizing the Museum’s exhibits and programs on four Friday nights during the summer months. Families are invited to play together, learn together, and build the skills that contribute to school success and a lifetime love of learning. Target $1 Friday Nights are always a great time to visit the Museum, and these Always Learning nights are designed especially for Boston Public School families.
The activities are designed to support learning in the key content areas of literacy, science, math, engineering, and the arts. They will demonstrate the learning value of the Museum’s exhibits and show parents just how directly involved they can be in their child’s learning. These programs show adults that their children are always learning and that learning happens in everyday moments.
Research shows that many students lose ground academically when they are out of school for the summer. Low-income students are particularly affected, losing an average of more than two months in reading proficiency over the summer. “Our partnership with Boston Public Schools and BELL is focused on parent engagement in reducing summer learning loss and in supporting their children’s learning over time,” said Leslie Swartz, Senior Vice President of Research and Program Planning at the Museum. “This program capitalizes on a unique aspect of the Museum – the involvement of parents in the visit and play of their children.” The program has been made possible with support from the Institute for Museum and Library Services and the Alice Willard Dorr Foundation.
To accommodate the families that are English language learners, the Museum has prepared informational material in the main languages understood by Boston Public School families. Each night has an exciting different theme. The program sessions will take place at the Museum from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 19, July 17, July 24, and July 31.
