Boston Children’s Museum Launches Artist-in-Residence Program
Boston, MA (PRWEB) December 15, 2015 -- Boston Children’s Museum’s announced it has created an artist-in residence program that will enable local artists to present their work in the Museum’s Gallery space and have a conversation with Museum visitors about the meaning and the inspiration behind their work. The new program, called Current, has been created in partnership with Alter Projects, an initiative that fosters artistic infrastructure through custom arts programming and consultation for artists.
The residency format creates a direct channel between contemporary artists and children, while also providing artists-in-residence an opportunity to delve into their practice. “Current was inspired by the teaching and learning theories of contemporary artists and arts educators. Art is a major component of Boston Children’s Museum experience and making our space available to the artist community provides exposure for local artists and fosters the conversation around the power of art and the creative process,” said Alice Vogler, Museum Arts Program Manager.
Current invites one artist per year to utilize a studio-space within the Museum, build a site-specific installation and design arts learning experiences for children and families over a multi-month residency and programmatic exhibition. By creating a studio-space within the Museum, building a site-specific installation and offering artist-designed learning experiences, the program will create a direct channel between contemporary artists, children, and their families.
The first artist-in-residence is Eve L. Ewing a celebrated artist, educator, scholar, and writer whose installation, A Map Home, explores themes of place, childhood exploration and the ways we connect text and image to make meaning in everyday life. The installation offers different modes of engagement for very young children, their older siblings and even adults. A Map Home suggests new points of discovery and stories to share depending on who is viewing it and when. It also draws visual inspiration from the street-level images of Ewing’s native Chicago.
Alter Projects, an initiative lead by Maggie Cavallo and Leonie Bradbury helped design the residency and will remain a sustained partner working directly with the Museum staff and the artist-in-residence in the planning, execution and completion of the project.
“What is essential about this residency program is that its utility is optimized for multiple constituencies,” says Cavallo. “Our artists-in-residence have the opportunity to engage deeply and uniquely through their practice within Boston Children’s Museum. Children and families access contemporary art, ideas and artists in a meaningful way, and the institution itself is able to enhance the ways it engages with contemporary artists and the field of Art Education.”
A Map Home will be on view December 23, 2015 - March 13, 2016.
Opening Reception will be on Friday, January 15, from 7-9pm.

Hours and Admission
The Museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Fridays until 9:00 p.m. Adults, $16, children (1-15) and senior citizens, $16; children under 12 months and Museum members are always free. Fridays 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., all visitors $1.
