Bowie and Hyattsville, MD Orthodontist Dr. Derek E. Brown Continues to Give Back to His Community
Bowie and Hyattsville, MD (PRWEB) March 04, 2014 -- On January 15, 2014, Dr. Derek E. Brown and his team at Winning Smiles Orthodontics committed to make a sizable donation to several local public charter schools for the 3rd year in a row. Due to the fact that Dr. Brown grew up in the New York City Public School system, he has always felt both blessed and compelled to give back to an educational system that helped to put him on a path to academic and career success. The public charter school systems to which Dr. Brown once again agreed to lend his financial support for the 2014 year will be the KIPP Baltimore Foundation, The D.C. Seed Foundation, and Harlem Children’s Zone - all magnificent and well established foundations.
Dr. Derek E. Brown explains “When it comes to establishing what in life is really important, service to one’s community is paramount. For those of us who have been fortunate enough to have made it, my philosophy has always been to reach back and help to support others to succeed as well. Ever since my induction into my fraternity over 25 years ago (Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.), my commitment to my community has never wavered. If we all give just a little of ourselves, we can make our country and our world a much better place.”
Upon graduation from the University of Virginia in 1991, Dr. Brown decided to become a dentist. After getting his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree at the University of Maryland Dental School in 1995, Dr. Brown once again continued his education by getting a Master’s Degree in Biology and specializing in Orthodontics in the Washington, DC area (which entails using braces and Invisalign® to correct bad bites, and to straighten crooked, spaced, and crowded teeth). He completed those specialty degrees in 1998 and then went into private. Dr. Brown maintains a position on the faculty of the University of Maryland Dental School as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthodontics.
Outside of his practice, Dr. Brown has been married for 17 years and is a proud father of three beautiful children. Additionally, Dr. Brown has been a volunteer youth coach for over ten years, primarily coaching baseball and football. He is also a Life Member of his beloved fraternity. “I love my life and my career,” says Dr. Brown. “I am blessed, and I know that without others reaching back and helping me, there is no way that I would be where I am today. Therefore, I’m looking forward to continuing and expanding upon my community work in the years to come, through mentoring, coaching, establishing foundations, or whatever my community needs me to do. In the words of one of my heroines Maya Angelou, 'When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.'"
