Britain Sees a "Dramatic Rise" in Lung Cancer Diagnoses
Bolton, UK (PRWEB UK) 17 December 2013 -- According to the BBC, a campaign urging people with a persistent cough to see their doctor has led to a “Dramatic rise” in Lung Cancer diagnoses (1). With lung cancer accounting for over a fifth of all deaths caused by cancer, it is crucial that such changes continue.
The campaign, which ran over May and June 2012, urged those who suffered with a cough for more than three weeks, to visit their GP. It is believed, that around 700 extra patients were diagnosed with lung cancer, due to a heightened awareness of the symptoms associated with the disease. In total, 8,335 people were diagnosed, a figure 9% higher than the same time period within the previous year.
Dr Harpal Kumar, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, described the results-
"It is great news that this campaign has raised awareness of lung cancer symptoms among those most at risk of the disease.
"By acting quickly if you notice a possible symptom, you can give yourself the best chance of survival.In many cases it won't be cancer, but it is better to be sure and, if it is cancer, to detect it earlier rather than later."
As reported by the BBC, it is believed, that the ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ advertisements have helped to improve lung cancer survival rates, with hundreds of patients receiving potentially life-saving surgery, as a consequence of the campaign. Hopes are that the campaign will run again next year, ensuring that the message reaches as many potential sufferers as possible.
