Leading gadget recycling comparison site CompareMyMobile website and app has now saved UK customers over £20/$30.5 million, by allowing them to use the site to compare recycle values of old gadgets before selling them on. UK recyclers have paid out almost £50/$76 million for old technology after consumers have compared prices through the site.
Data shows that CompareMyMobile has processed hundreds of thousands of transactions since launching back in 2009, diverting huge amounts of electronic waste from ending up in landfill. Since the launch, the trend of gadget recycling has grown, along with the average pricing of handsets CompareMyMobile.com.
Site data shows that at the beginning of 2010, the average value of a handset was just £20. It is thought this is due to initial customers selling extremely old handsets which had been kept in drawers for a while according to site experts. However, now people sell their phones as soon as they upgrade, the average recycle value of a handset on CompareMyMobile is £108 – over four times as much as when it launched.
This isn’t the only way the site CompareMyMobile website has evolved. Figures from the comparison site show it started by comparing 1,399 devices and 13,402 prices from 21 recyclers – it now shows 4,124 devices and 96,039 prices from 44 recyclers, allowing more and more people to value their old gadgets.
Co-founder of the site, Ashley Turner, says: “We’re proud to be where we are today. We owe our successes in hitting these milestones to focusing on what the consumer needs. Gadget recycling is a fairly new industry that is filled with questions and issues with which companies to trust, sometimes resulting in negative consumer choices. We’ve aimed to make it transparent as possible running a comparison site that is influenced by consumer ratings and positive customer signals. We’ll continue to keep producing new technologies, improving the site for the customer and make a real impact on the E-Waste of the United Kingdom.”
Since the launch date of the site back in 2009, Apple has dominated the mobile phone recycling market share, holding the huge 35% stake that it still does today.
The downfall of Nokia is apparent through the site data. It held 23% of the mobile phone recycling market share in 2010 – down to 7% today. The popularity of Samsung’s Galaxy range has seen Samsung’s trade-in market share double to 21% - over taking Nokia and BlackBerry to hold the second largest percentage of the market share. BlackBerry sits in third with 18%.
As CompareMyMobile website now shows the rises and falls in recycle value, it is often reflective of current trends of popular handsets in the smartphone and gadget market. For example, following the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S4 back in March, the site saw a huge 127% surge in existing Samsung Galaxy valuations – suggesting that the device was going to be extremely popular, as it indeed was.
CompareMyMobile is dedicated to showing consumers the best value they can get for their old gadgets, while also reviewing recyclers to make sure they do it with a company they can trust. The site say they will continue to expand and improve their services, allowing more and more people to recycle old phones.
