BRM Announces Ball Hones for Cylinder Wall Deglazing and Engine Rebuilds; Flexible Honing Promotes Piston Ring Seating and Sealing in Automotive Engines
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 11, 2013 -- Brush Research Manufacturing (BRM), maker of flexible honing tools and a full line of industrial brushes, is announcing ball hones for cylinder wall deglazing. BRM is attending the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) tradeshow in Indianapolis this week (Booth 5511), where racing professionals will learn about Flex-Hone® tools for rebuilding truck, motorcycle, and racecar engines.
For 55 years, BRM has provided automotive surface finishing solutions to mechanics, machinists, and manufacturers. At PRI 2013, buyers can see what some Flex-Hone® users call ball hones, a reference to the abrasive globules or balls that provide BRM cylinder hones with their distinctive appearance. Made with flexible nylon abrasive filaments, ball hones impart an oil-retaining and long-wearing plateau finish.
Flex-Hone® tools are sometimes called cylinder hones because they are used for rebuilding engines. When engine blocks are manufactured, OEMs typically use large honing machines to size the bores. With engine rebuilds, however, engine mechanics choose Flex-Hone® tools because ball hones break the “glaze” on cylinder walls that can cause engine problems.
Improve Lubrication and Reduce Wear
Over time, a piston’s up-and-down movement polishes cylinders walls or liners to a mirror-like finish. Left unbroken, this overly-smooth surface finish prevents engine oil from adhering properly and keeps piston rings from forming a tight enough seal.
For mechanics who rebuild engines, cylinder wall deglazing is a critical task. As BRM explains in its most recent Flex-Hone® Blog entry, some engine rebuilders call the ball hone a glaze breaker hone because of its capabilities. During a recent rebuild of a Saturn engine, for example, a Flex-Hone® user explained how cylinder honing tools produced a controlled surface condition unobtainable by any other method.
Engine Rebuild Example
For The Bug Boys, a blogger who covers do-it-yourself (DIY) automotive projects, the best tool for cylinder wall deglazing is the BRM Flex-Hone®. Versatile and easy-to use, ball hones are self-centering, self-aligning to the bore, and self-compensating for wear. Flexible hones mount in machine centers as well as handheld power tools, making them the right choice for manufacturers and mechanics alike.
BRM engine hones require the use of a lubricant or honing oil, and should be inserted into the bore while the cylinder hone is spinning. As the Flex-Hone® Resource Guide explains, BRM ball hones are low RPM tools. For best results, follow best practices, including the use of hot or warm soapy water to clean the engine block after cylinder honing is complete.
