BRM Announces Technical Resource for NamPower Nylon Abrasive Brushes; Guide Covers Brush Tool Specifications, Recommended Speeds, and Cut Depth

Available via the BRM website, this free guide covers product specifications, recommended speeds, and cut depths for deburring, edge radiusing, and surface finishing operations.
NamPower Abrasive Disc Brushes
Available in dot and turbine styles, NamPower disc brushes feature a unique combination of ceramic and silicon carbide abrasive that produces maximum burr removal rates and an optimum surface finish at the same time. Dot style abrasive disc brushes are used for light deburring. Turbine style deburring tools are recommended for medium to heavy-duty burr removal.
In addition to brush style, NamPower abrasive disc brushes are specified by trim length, grit, and brush diameter. NamPower disc brushes come in 18-mm and 38-mm trim lengths and in 80, 120, 180, and 320 grit. For best results, BRM recommends choosing a deburring tool that is three inches larger than the workpiece. If fixture restrictions limit brush size, align the centerline of the abrasive disc brush with the targeted edge and with a minimum overlap of 1-1/2”.
Brush Tool Speeds
As the NamPower Resource Guide explains, product specifications help determine brush tool speeds. In addition to brush style, trim length, grit, and brush diameter, users must consider whether the abrasive disc brush will be used under wet or dry conditions. In general, brush tools with shorter trim lengths (18-mm) are used at higher speeds than brush tools with longer trim lengths (38-mm). In addition, lower-grit disc brushes generally run at faster speeds than higher-grit disc brushes.
The NamPower Resource Guide displays recommended speeds in the form of an easy-to-read bar chart that includes product specifications and application conditions (wet or dry). This technical resource also explains that NamPower abrasive disc brushes should be operated at under 2,500 surface feet per minute (SFPM) in dry applications, and 3,500 SFPM in wet applications. Excessive speeds, especially with longer trim-length brushes, may cause filaments to flair and bounce off the workpiece.
Cut Depth
NamPower specifications also determine recommended cut depth. BRM recommends setting the cut depth up to 10% penetration of the available trim length on smaller diameter filaments, and up to 5% penetration on larger diameter filaments. By decreasing the spindle speed with increased depth of interference, filaments can conform smoothly to part contours.
