Brookhaven Retreat Celebrates Healthy Weight Week in January
Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) January 23, 2014 -- Many women with mental health issues struggle with poor self-esteem that affects nutritional habits and body image. During Healthy Weight Week on January 19-25, the women in Brookhaven Retreat’s residential treatment facility focus on the healthy habits that improve body image and nutrition habits.
The emotional breakage at the root of many mental illnesses also causes self-esteem issues. Women with depression, anxiety and addiction issues often experience feelings of emptiness and worthlessness. Brookhaven Retreat finds that this internal suffering is often outwardly expressed in a woman’s relationship with food.
Food is the way we nourish our bodies. Often, restrictive behaviors are a form of self-punishment or attempt at self-perfection. Instead of making women feel better, they encourage further feelings of hopelessness and depression. Healthy Weight Week celebrates a healthy, diet-free approach to food that promotes feelings of acceptance, health and self-esteem.
Brookhaven Retreat integrates dialectical behavior therapy skills into its approach to nutrition. The women in its program create an awareness of hunger cues and mindful eating skills. Juicing and nutrition classes, individual sessions with a registered dietitian and weekly body image and healthy habits groups are a regular part of its residential program. Its team of chefs also focuses on creating complete, healthy meals that nourish the body and mind.
All of Brookhaven Retreat’s groups encourage the healthy habits and positive thought processes so fundamental to healthy body image and self-esteem. This self-esteem in turn is critical to recovery, as it creates the foundation of worth upon which wellness is built.
